Secrets de Rose Les Parfums de Rosine NEW

Secrets de Rose is a floral-amber rose fragrance inspired by the rare black rose.  Secrets de Rose
is a rose in black… mysterious and heady.  Secrets and the mystery of a rose… which becomes more languid, more suave, and more carnal.  It assumes the black to adorn itself in mysterious veils.
From the bud, its colour is so deep, it could be black. And when in full bloom, the black and purple velvet of its petals turns it crimson.  This very rose is heady;
spellbinding; it has a black side in its scent of rose, a little bit animal,
a little bit heavy. Still disturbing is this indecisive smell of liquorice,
black plum, cumin and saffron…a sweet and animal accord on
the elegance of the rose.

The fragrance notes feature bitter orange, plum, Rose essence,
saffron, licorice, plum, magnolia, ylang ylang, rose absolute,
jasmine, cumin, sandalwood, amber, labdanum, moss and musks.
Olfactory family : Amber rose floral

Les Parfums de Rosine ROSA FLAMENCA

I am a huge fan of Les Parfums de Rosine fragrance house from Paris and I own numerous "Rosine's". The two main passions of Marie-Hélène Rogeon are perfumes and roses. They are all so different from one another and only she can create the infinite variety of perfumes.  For her, as a perfumer, Rose Essence and Rose Absolue are the quintessence of all the great perfumes.  Marie-Hélène Rogeon built a collection of rose perfumes, all unique, from the fresh, crisp and clean Un Zest de Rose to the sensuous Une Folie de Rose.

Rosa Flamenca by Les Parfums de Rosine is a rose floral fragrance for women
and belongs to the olfactory family of Floral bouquet. The perfumer behind this fragrance is Marie-Helene Rogeon but was created by François Robert in 2004. This fragrance has been described as "captivating with the wild rhythm of flamenco. Rosa Flamenca is inspired by the roses clumping in the luminous Maria Luisa gardens in Seville." Les Parfums de Rosine Rosa Flamenca Eau de Parfum is a rose fragrance that compells one to move closer.

Top note : Orange Blossom, Neroli, Petit Grain, Green orange peel.
Heart note : Jasmine, Rose de Mai Absolue, Rose essence, Fig tree hood.
Base note : Sandalwood, Benzoin, White musk.

On all of the different fragrance in the line, there are also soaps and creams available.  Les Parfums de Rosine
Joy by Jean Patou

Joy is a perfume created for Parisian couturier Jean Patou by perfumer Henri Alméras in 1929. It is considered to be one of the greatest fragrances created and is a landmark example of the floral genre in perfumery. Joy was created as a reaction to the 1929 Wall Street Crash, which had diminished the fortunes of Jean Patou's wealthy American clientele. Despite its elevated price and the depressed economic environment, Joy became an instant success and has remained Jean Patou's most famous fragrance.  At the heart of Joy is a luxurious combination of jasmine and rose. 10,000 jasmine flowers and 28 dozen Bulgarian roses  (Let's see: 336 roses per bottle?) are required to create 30ml of the parfum, hence its high selling price. Joy also contains other flowers such as ylang ylang and tuberose.

Despite its many ingredients, Joy does not smell like a just one single flower. According to Luca Turin, "the whole point of its formula was to achieve the platonic idea of a flower, not one particular earthly manifestation." The bottle was created by French architect and artisan Louis Süe and was designed to have a simple, classical feel. Worth every penny to own and wear. Available at fine department stores.
Essence  Narciso Rodriguez

This is the second perfume for women from American designer Narciso Rodriguez.  The sophisticated mirror bottle shelters a radiant rose essence.  This is a powdery rose over a base of musk, which is the couturier’s signature ingredient. The perfume is described as having been inspired by "a woman's dual nature - the intense and ethereal, the simple and complex."

Essence is a pure, sensual, luminous fragrance with a modern heart of musk. A layer of rose petals, powdery iris, warm amber and musk’s but at the same time, is described as clean, sexy and light.

Ta'if by Ormonde Jayne

Linda Pilkerton Perfumer and Owner of Ormonde Jayne describes her fragrance Ta'if in Sniffapalooza Magazine: "Ta'if is a rose like no other rose, because it grows 5000 feet above sea level in Saudi Arabia and is unique to the town named Tai'f. This rose has all the richness of a rose with a citrus top note making it quite different from any rose in the world. Ormonde Jayne Ta'if Eau de Parfum has been created with the natural harmony from this extraordinary terrain in mind,  blended with orange blossom and date oil.  Ta'if EDP to this day is still our number one best seller at Ormonde Jayne".

All of the fragrances produced by Ormonde Jayne are gorgeous and they have a certain "aura" about them which I have always found intriguing. They have a great sample program and shipping is fast from the UK.

Le Pot Aux Roses by Stephanie de Saint Aignan

Adam Eastwood, Co Founder of Luckyscent.com and The Scent Bar explains:

"A rose like no other?  "Le Pot Aux Roses" by Stephanie de Saint Aignan is without question one of my favorite rose fragrances, not merely for it’s fascinatingly gourmand characteristics, but also for the cheeky story behind it genesis. I love the deliciously creamy essence of rice powder gently mixing with complex musk’s, giving it a gourmand quality that never fails to stimulate my hunger for a snow white panna cotta. In fact I would argue that there is little rose in Pot Aux Roses, and yet somehow the properties of rose are transmitted. The decidedly feminine rice powder adds to the mysterious quality surrounding the fragrance which is based on the French saying "Découvrir le Pot aux Roses" which means to discover the trick, or realize the illusion. The pot aux roses was and old technique used by Parisian courtesans to convince clients that they were experiencing pleasure when they most assuredly were not. The mistresses would keep a pot of rose powder within grasp. During the romantic interlude she would gently pat her cheeks with the powder, giving the impression she was flushed and aroused. So, in a sense, the concept behind "Le Pot aux Roses" is in fact a trick, or an artifice to convey something which may not really be there. Rose without much rose; a deliciously mysterious illusion with a profoundly stimulating conclusion."  -

Rose Vert, Dirty Rose, American Rose, American Beauty, Beach Rose,
la Rose Fleurette and Essenza dell' Ibisco by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is another artistic perfumer with a cult following and a devoted clientele. She has so many rose fragrances that I cannot keep up and all of her fragrances are beautiful.
I have many friends that adore her rose fragrances.  In an article for Sniffapalooza Magazine, she commented on her fragrance titled Dirty Rose; "I named my ‘rose like no other’ Dirty Rose. This rose blooms for men. Although it is a rose based perfume the rose note does not dominate; it is interwoven throughout the fragrance, emerging and growing as it dries down. There is balance between the wood and smoky resin notes and the red (Gallica) rose.  It is the image of a single rose that has been a bit manhandled; bruised and dragged through the mud which gives it its rugged beauty."

You can view all of her rose fragrances (and others) at DSH Perfumes

Tiempe Passant Antonia’s Flowers

Ron Robinson, President of Apothia Los Angeles & Fred Segal states that this is his favorite "rose fragrance. "Antonia’s Flowers Tiempe Passant is my choice if I had to only pick one. The freshness of the salty ocean air and bright top reveal the woody undertones.  One of my favorite modern perfumers."  Luca Turin describes this as a "big rose".

Only for the extremely decadent and sensual, this unique, feminine fragrance named after a love song Antonia's grandfather wrote, offers a musky, floral scent with it's key notes being Cedarwood, Amber, Clementine, Bergamont and Montauk Rose.

S-Perfume 100% Love

Created by legendary perfumer Sophia Grojsman, 100% Love® reinvents sensuality through intoxicating and addictive notes using the rose.  Nobi Shioya, Founder of S-Perfumes stated in an article for Sniffapalooza Magazine that: "100% Love is not just about petals, there are thorns. When a great artist creates something amazing, it comes with some degree of "shock value" that makes many people uncomfortable. I believe this is what made the nose for 100% love, Sophia Grojsman one of the greatest perfumers of all time. If I compare this fragrance to cars, 100% Love is a little bit like Ferrari F40 or 288 GTO in a way...these cars show who the experts in driving are and who really deserves them. The fragrance is about love but it tells you not only the romantic side of it but also the tough side, too."
Per S-Perfume 100% Love; Perfumes The Guide states that: "I must say that very seldom (in fact not since 1992) have I had such a feeling of surprise and delighted incomprehension when first smelling a fragrance."  -LT

S-Perfume 100% Love represents the pulpy erotic part of a secret red fruit, the rich, deep and velvety skin of a dark natural rose by L.M.R., a ray of green sap from the rose's thorn, a mystical "concoction" of incense and black cacao.    S-Perfume 100% Love website

Manakara Eau de Parfum by Indult

What Chandler Burr has said of Manakara:

"Manakara smells like a color-saturated contemporary painting, as if Barnett Newman’s 1966 “Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue?” somehow exuded scent from its glaring acrylic surface. Kurkdjian olfactorily “photographed” rose and lychee, then treated those natural scents with an acid wash of synthetic perfumery raw materials. The resulting perfume is brilliant, vibrating between real, delicate rose-lychee and an intentionally disorienting neon gas version.
The perfume is well-constructed, mesmerizing and slightly outrageous".

Perfumer is Francis Kurkdjian and Manakara is named for a village in Madagascar known for its legendary lychee fruit (also spelled litchi)  According to Lucky Scent it is "presented here as a sweet, honeyed and mysterious floral-tinged pudding-like fruit fragrance with amazing hidden depths -- but rich and delicate lychee, a scent that’s like tropical fruits meets ripe red fruits with a soft, creamy floral mixed in. A custardy, creamy sweet fruit dessert of a perfume laced with rose water"   Manakara Notes: Rose, lychee

Estée Lauder Beautiful

Beautiful is a floral fragrance that was launched in 1985, is called a "classic rose" and was created in collaboration between Bernard Chant and Max Gavarry.  The perfume is described as a brigh, rich tobacco rose, a flowery fragrance and was one of the big hits of the1980's.  This feminine scent possesses a blend of blooming fresh cut flowers, rose, jasmine, and carnation. Beautiful perfume has aslo been called "The fragrance of a thousand flowers" and is blended with expertise and creativity, the tender bouquet is warmed with a rich, woody base and brightened with a touch of citrus.

Damascena by Keiko Mecheri

I adore Keiko Mecheri fragrances and Damasca is next to Mogador in her collection of modern rose fragrances. This modern fragrance is a highly distinctive rose and Keiko Mecheri is known for her obsession with the power of scent to evoke emotion.  A glorious example of the many facets of the rose blossom. Damascena blends three distinct roses: wild Moroccan rose, may rose and Turkish rose, with white musk.

A radiant composition of Bulgarian Roses and wild roses of Mogador, with white musk.  A true celebration of roses!

Loukhoum Parfum du Soir Parfum Extrait by Keiko Mecheri

I recently rediscovered this fragrance and was amazed at how beautiful it is. This is my favorite version rather the original Loukhoum. (too much almond comes across as "Jergens" lotion on me)  The Parfum du Soir Extrait features the rose and Oud in a more pronounced way, which grabs my attention.  Loukhoum Parfum Du Soiris extreme, sensuous, rich and intense. This is a stunning rose absolute that blooms magnificently on the skin.  Creamy vanilla absolute adds warmth with delicious white almond, the fragrance is made deeper with notes of tonka bean and benzoin.  Parfum du Soir is hypnotic, magical and is sultrier than the original, again, because of the roses and oud, I believe.  Notes: Rose absolute, Wardia rose, oud, patchouli, white almond, vanilla Madagascar absolute, tonka bean, benzoin.   Lucky Scent

Chanel No. 5 Eau Première

Chanel No. 5 Eau Première by Chanel Perfume

Pour Une Femme de Caron

Pour Une Femme resting on a bed of roses, enveloped in the tears of Oliban, is an invitation to sensuality. This perfume is a study in the mystery of frankincense, the sensuality of amber and benzoin. Pour Une Femme de Caron is a chypre floral fragrance.

It is a burst of aldehydic notes that reveals a Damask rose and a silky, sexy base of olibanum, myrrh, ambergris and vanilla. Parfums Caron

Caron OR ET NOIR and Caron ROSE

Another favorite line of mine is the House of Caron. Of all the flowers on which CARON’s reputation is built, the rose is the one which most fascinated Ernest Daltroff.  Present in the heart of most of his creations, and olfactory signature of CARON’s powders, Daltroff never ceased to be inspired by it, nor did he manage to exhaust its subtle nuances. Inspired by this muse with many faces, (The Rose) he dedicated two compositions to the rose in 1949 magnifying it's beauty from top to base:  Or et Noir and Rose.   Inspired by the notes left by Daltroff, Michel Morsetti created Or et Noir in 1949. To compose this perfume, which exuded all the richness and captivating warmth of the oriental rose, Félicie Wanpouille would insist on only the most precious materials for the fabrication in the limited-edition bottle was made from Baccarat crystal and covered entirely in gold leaf. Notes of Bulgarian rose, centifolia rose, Anatolian rose, lilac, carnation and oakmoss.

Caron Rose was also introduced in 1949 and perfumer for this fragrances is Michel Morsetti.  Caron Rose combined with different absolutes of roses, including May rose and Centifolia rose with Geranium for earthiness and mint for freshness.                                             Images from Caron

Lumiere Noire Pour Femme and Noire Pour Homme Eau de Parfum by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Lumière Noire is the idea of two opposing powers (lumiere means "light," while Noire means "dark" in French), which is translated into a rose and patchouli blend. There is a women's and a men's version. Love the association of the words Lumiere and Noire (Light and Black), an attraction and repulsion. The emblematic blend of rose chypre rooted in earthy patchouli…

In Lumière Noire Pour Femme, he intensifies the animal lurking between the deep red petals with the hay-tobacco facets of narcissus, a lash of indolic jasmine and a sprinkle of cumin. Pimiento heats up the stormy blend. This is perfume in the grand manner: unapologetically intense, romantic with abandon, and a perfect match for its virile soul mate, Lumière Noire Pour Homme. Marian Bendeth once said  to me that "Francis Kurkdjian does a rose fragrance like no other perfumer"

Pour Femme Notes include: Spiced Rose (cumin, hot pepper), Patchouli & Narcissus.  Pour Homme Notes include: Spiced Rose (cumin, cinnamon)  Patchouli, Narcissus, Mugwort herb

Rose Oud by Kilian

Rose Oud by Kilian is part of Killian's Arabian Night Collection.  Periods and continents diverge to give birth to this oriental collection. The “Arabian Nights” collection will be composed of 5 perfumes, 5 olfactive harmonies, all built around essential oils with strong symbolic values from the East: Oud, Rose, Incense, Amber and Musk. PURE OUD and ROSE OUD are the first stopovers of this olfactive trip.  Oud is an extremely rare and precious oil found in Agarwood, the resinous heartwood of the Aquilaria tree from southeast Asia. The oil itself is dark in coloration and has a complex scent, being warm and woody, yet strongly animalistic at the same time. In many Middle Eastern countries, Oud is believed to be worth more than its weight in gold. To echo this belief, the Kilian bottle has a gold plaque engraved with the name of the perfume and the box is decorated with a gold plaque on the top.

ROSE OUD by Kilian is a more feminine interpretation of Oud by Calice Becker, using the luxurious petals of the Turkish Rose. This unusual combination of Rose with Oud in a
fragrance gives birth to a scent that is both mysterious, rich and opulent yet comfortably familiar. As always now, unexpected accords become Kilian’s signature.  A strikingly lovely rose made all the more enticing by a drop of darkness. In the opening the rose is a delicate bud with a bit of green, but on the skin it opens up like a fine wine - rich and luscious with a deep, plummy sweetness. The oud is definitely present, but it doesn't feel like a separate entity. It's as if the rose has been infused with oud - its stem has been placed in the oil and it has translated the mysterious stuff through its petals, transforming itself into a rose of unusual moodiness and intrigue. The senses are teased with veils of smoke, traces of leather, hints of wood - passing shadows that make the luminous bloom glow more intensely by contrast. Created by the very talented Calice Becker, this is lush, feminine and exquisitely beautiful.  Rose Oud Notes: Turkish rose, oud, saffron, cardamom

Parfum d’Empire 3 Fleurs

Translates into three words: Rose, Jasmine. Tuberose.

3 FLEURS for 3 loves… the fragrance develops the presence of three emblematic flowers of love in all great civilisations. The rose with its pure notes offers passionate love. All the warmth of jasmine for romantic love. Finally, the alluring tuberose to evoke forbidden love. 3 FLEURS distills notes of the Bulgarian rose, jasmine from Egypt, and the tuberose of India, sublimating the most beautiful premier materials of perfumery. Far from being vapid, it affirms its distinct character.

"An olfactory emblem of Love: that is the concept behind 3 Fleurs, the latest offering from Parfum d’Empire and perfumer Marc-Antoine Corticchiato, who is also the creator of the much-acclaimed artisanal brand. Rose is the most prominent of the flowers, but it is not a deep dark rose; the accompaniment of honeysuckle-like jasmine and, later, creamy tuberose, makes for a delicate tea-rose smell that is easy to wear."  Read full Suzanne Keller review...     www.aedes.com

Le Jardin Retrouvé

Eau de Parfum Rose Opéra was created in 1952 for the Opéra de Paris .  Perfumer Yuri Gutsatz was asked to "perfume" the opera house for a sequence of "Les Indes Galantes", a lavish opera presentation by Rameau. Yuri Gutsatz conceived, for the 2nd Act of the Les Indes Galantes "Ballet des Fleurs", a perfume called "L'Apparition de la Rose". Using the limited technical resources that were available at that time, the theatre was filled with the perfume of roses (he was the first to accomplish this, a major feat in those days) when the prima ballerina appeared on stage costumed as a rose. When he created his Rose Opéra, his source of inspiration was naturally the souvenirs of "Apparition de la Rose" of Les Indes Galantes in the Opéra de Paris!  Eau de Parfum Rose de Mai (Damask Rose).  Yuri Gutsatz created this rose fragrance is blend of two Rose fragrances − the Damascus Rose, or Rose of May, and Rose Centifolia, or Oriental Rose, that is grown over acres of fields in Bulgaria and Turkey.  Eau de Parfum Rose Thé (Tearose)  is mysterious, majestic and sweet at the same time, the tearose fragrance is probably the best-known among the numerous floral perfume creations in the world. It can be found in many products, from perfumes to toileteries.  The Jardin Retrouvé's Eau de Parfum Rose Thé commences with a characteristic head-note that is green and strong and a base note, reinforced by the presence of musk and slightly wood-like tones to embellish the tearose fragrance. For the Eau de Parfum Rose Opéra Yuri Gutsatz had no concern for cost, prepared a ROSE perfume for the INDES IMMAGINAIRES (Imaginary India) of the 18th century. He attended many performances, and each time, he heard the spectators whisper "it smells like roses". I recently was available to smell all of the fragrances from this house and I have to say, they are very beautiful and very well made. The roses are very high quality and these fragrances deserve more publicity and interest. The "roses" in this collection are right up there with the best!  My friend Divina at Fragrance Bouquet also covered this and the Le Jardin Retrouvé website is full of history of this fascinating story.

In following with the rose theme, how can I not include these videos below?  The following videos are of the ballet "Les Indes Galantes "Ballet des Fleurs", the ballet that was re-created and a video of "Le Spectre de la Rose" danced by Baryshnikov. Make sure your volume is on to hear the beautiful music. The last two videos are "extras", one more of "Le Spectre de la Rose" and another segent from "Les Indes Galantes "Ballet des Fleurs".

"A young girl returning from her first ball, fatigued by excitement, falls asleep in her chair. She dreams that the rose she holds in her hand is dancing with her.  When he disappears through the window, she awakens, still under the spell of her dream."

Osez-Moi! by Chantal Thomass

French lingerie designer Chantal Thomass stated
"I wanted to create my new fragrance Osez-moi! the way I create my lingerie: with generosity, sophistication, temptation, seduction and sensuality. In the spirit of the boudoir, I poetically and audaciously transgressed codes by combining pink, grey and black to create a coquette and cheeky mix. I played with a masculine-feminine contrast on the packaging, opted for a non-conformist bottle and poured all my character into the fragrance!" . Osez-Moi! launched in 2009.

Top Notes Rose, Frangipani, Geranium, Chamomile.  Heart Notes Rhubarb, Peony, Vanilla.
Base Notes White musk, Amber, Vetiver, Mysore Sandalwood, Patchouli

Byredo Rose Noir

Ben Gorham, Founder and Owner of Byredo Perfumes told Sniffapalooza Magazine that "The idea for Rose Noir was to take something very traditional in perfumery and the challenge was to make it both modern and unique without losing the character of a Damascus rose. I wanted to add an animalic note to make it a black rose. I like to think of it as a dirty rose."

In Rose Noir, the classic symbol of love and devotion is updated. A traditional olfactory rose, the Damascene, is made potent and contemporary once again by darkening its character.  Rose Noir becomes a decadent, dirty rose with intense and animalic quality.  Top: Grapefruit, Freesia.  Mid: Rose Damascena . Base: Cistus, Moss, Musk    www.barneys.com
Chanel No 18

Michael Edwards classifies this as a Classical Floral and this is listed under “Rose” in his Fragrances Of The World 2009.  While others love to state that this is just "an ambrette fragrance" , the reality is; it has "ambrette in it", which is different.  I guess a rose sometimes does not smell what we think... No 18 is a radiant floral fragrance. Ambrette, with its jewel-like flowers, is at the centre of this enchanting bouquet, with fruity, sweet notes in the form of rose. No 18 is a light, woody, floral – fruity fragrance. No 18, according to Jacques Polge: 'there's never been anything that smells like this, and maybe there never will be again'.

No.18 features rose and a rare ingredient, ambrette seed, and Polge describes the scent as 'musty'.
Montale Fragrances

Some of the Montale fragrances are my favorites because not only are they beautiful, they are long-lasting.  Here are only a few of the "roses" ...all are gorgeous.

Montale Oriental Flowers: The sublime freshness of oriental notes, essence of rose, bergamot, ylang-ylang, iris' root, Egyptian jasmine, an oriental bouquet sustained by the bewitching Peruvian balsam. Montale Sweet Oriental Dream: The loveliest rose of France gives its elegance to Turkish delight, a subtle marriage of the noble centifolia rose and the fun accord of almonds and honey. Velvet Flowers: The voluptuous bouquet of rose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang is accented with the bittersweet note of peach blossoms. Foiled in the duskiness of saffron and sandalwood, Velvet Flowers captures the mood of a balmy summer evening. Its nuanced interplay of flowers and spices creates an opulent, yet harmonious composition. Montale Aoud Flowers: The rose absolute and geranium flowers meet the luxury of gaiac and teak woods to enhance the soft aoud scent. A masculine perfume on the edge of femininity, with a fresh touch of sicilian bergamot and sensual musk. Montale Crystal Flowers: Roses from the Dades Valley and refreshing italian mandarins combined with lilly of the valley, white musk and ambergris in a very sweet and sensual oriental flowers.

Guerlain Ode
The One that got away...
Guerlain is among the oldest perfume houses in the world and with all the rose fragrances in this rose fragrance series, I cannot help to think of "The One" that is almost impossible to obtain now.  Guerlain Ode, as everyone knows, was the last perfume created by Jacques Guerlain in 1955 with the assistance of his grandson, Jean-Paul Guerlain, who was only 18 years old at the time and was future heir to the famous master perfumer. The composition of Ode was helped by his grandson and is almost impossible to obtain a bottle now.  Ode (1955) is supposedly a floral perfume similar to Joy by Jean Patou. Notes of Rose Jasmine musk & woods.  Above left is just one original 1960 print ad for Guerlain's Ode perfume above 1960-Guerlain-Ode-perfume ad.

Twilight Rose by Kingsbury Fragrances

With so many rose fragrances on the market, sometimes it is hard to separate uninspiring scents from beautiful perfumes. Kingsbury Fragrances Twilight Rose is right up there with the "Big Guys" of other rose fragrances on the market.  I like my rose fragrances deep and mysterious.  They must sing to me of ancient lore and sensuality - a long lasting mist that envelopes me in a secret aura. Twilight Rose is a rose fragrance that transports me to a magical place. I can smell the fresh greenery that surrounds her roses, as if they are still rooted in the ground, with the stems then succulently plucked off at dusk for a vase by my bed.  Let us not forget that the history of the rose represents many things, dating back hundreds of years.  The rose represents healing and the heart.

Kingsbury Fragrance's Perfumer Dorothy McCall has created a voluptuous fresh green soliflore that slips into the sacred place where day surrenders unto night. This special handmade fragrance is a composition of Rose Otto from Turkey, Tea Rose bouquet with touches of Citrus, Clary Sage, Narcissus, Green Leaves, Vetiver, Musks and Civet.  Her candle fills the room with it's luscious scent.  I have found that a few of my "high end" fragrances from France have turned sour after only two years. Kingsbury Fragrances Twilight Rose smells just as fresh today as when I received it.  Available in parfum, cream, soap and candles. Samples and other products available at Kingsbury Fragrance's.        Read full review here by Raphaella Barkley

Caron Nuit De Noel

Launched in 1922, Nuit de Noel, whose name alone is evocative of a magical fairytale evening, to this day, proves to be extremely popular and continues to spawn a series of iconic limited editions.  The bottle design was inspired theatrically by the Roaring Twenties with an opaque black bottle with gold trim that conjures up all the mystery of an a bewitching Christmas Eve.  It is said that Ernest Daltroff, Caron's perfumer-owner wanted to please Félicie Wanpouille, his artistic director and collaborator, who loved Christmas. This was Daltroff's great gift to her in 1922.  For me, it evokes a magical night of snow falling softly in Paris. It truly is a "French" classical perfume and Nuit de Noel is in my top ten fragrances of all time. Boxed in one of the all time greatest perfume boxes, Nuit de Noël is a classic, magical and sexy oriental fragrance with notes of rose, tuberose and ylang-ylang top notes over sandalwood and mousse de saxe over musk. Some consider Nuit de Noël to be one of the ten most innovative fragrances of the 20th Century.  Nuit de Noel by Caron is classified as a oriental floral fragrance. Top notes are ylang-ylang, tincture of rose and jasmine; middle notes are sandalwood and oak moss; base notes are musk and amber. A classic.

Tea Rose by CB I Hate Perfume

Adored by many, Christopher Brosius is a genius when it comes to scents and he has been a cult favorite for years. He has been described as one of the "most innovative perfumers of the 21st Century."

Christopher set out to blend a glorious scent of a real rose, an authentic Moroccan rose absolute with a deep Indian tea scent. The metallic smell of black tea and the amazing velvety finish of real rose, in equal. He uses real rose absolute in this perfume and this is not the tea Rose of the past.

Lorenzo Villoresi Donna

Donna by Lorenzo Villoresi is a deep, rich, warm rose scent that blends a rich base of bulgarian rose and rose de mai that make this a a very special perfume. Fresh notes of coriander, clove and star anise add a subtle hint of spice while ylang ylang, iris root, narcissus, jasmine, violet leaves, blackcurrant and aromatic woods bring a beautiful balance to this Italian feminine classic.

The perfumes of Lorenzo Villoresi represent a universe where the materials, fragrances, and colours of Tuscany meet and harmonise with the spices, essences and influences of the Orient.  "Perfumery is an unlimited world. In the creation of a scent it is possible to recall a feeling or place to move to an imaginary space, or to invent new emotional dimensions."

L' Occitane Rose 4 Reines

The delicate freshness of a bouquet of roses, the velvety softness of petals kissed with dew. With its slightly fruity undertones from Grasse, Bulgarian, Moroccan and Turkish roses. This fragrance pays tribute to the daughters of the Count of Forcalquier as they were as beautiful as the roses they cherished: the Grasse rose, the Bulgarian rose, the Moroccan rose and the Turkish rose. Each one of these daughters married a king, and so it was that Marguerite, Eléonore, Sancie and Béatrix became the four Queens of Forcalquier.  This also comes in various matching products.  L' Occitane

Agent Provocateur by Agent Provocateur

Agent Provocateur’s award winning signature fragrance and cult favorite is a sexy and feminine fragrance combining pure saffron oil from India, Moroccan rose oil, Egyptian jasmine, French magnolia oil, amber and musk. Encased in a egg shaped porcelain bottle, this scent has become synonymous with seduction and pleasure. The high end lingerie brand, founded in the Soho London district by the son of the controversial British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, (see her two fragrances below) produced the “naughty chic” of lingeriere.

AGENT PROVOCATEUR BY AGENT PROVOCATEUR by Chandler Burr
"Dirty is vastly underrated as a perfume aesthetic. There are, of course, several kinds of dirty. Exhibit A is Agent Provocateur , a lingerie concern that, like Victoria’s Secret, professes to sell sex. But while Victoria’s Secret is that great Middle American Walt Disney of sex, Agent is slightly grittier, dirtier. Or it professes to be; sex packaged by marketers tends to promise the real thing but is in fact so sterile you couldn’t even catch the other person’s cold. It’s dirt without germs, an idea of intimacy without actually experiencing it. The surprise is that this turns out to be an excellent concept for a perfume. The brilliance of Agent Provocateur, the company’s rather astonishing first perfume, is that it doesn’t actually smell like unwashed panties. It’s better than that: it just reminds you of them. It smells like crushed raspberries and black plums on hot skin. Expertly constructed by the perfumer Christian Provenzano, the juice lasts beautifully, diffuses perfectly and could raise the fertility rate in Manhattan without raising laundry bills. It’s like a photo of a thong and cheeky ouverts. All image, no dirt."

Kenzo’s UFO fragrance: Unidentified Fragrance Object

Kenzo's UFO is produced in a limited quantity of 1,000 and the hand-polished Unidentified Fragrance Object bottles are filled with a perfume created by Perfumer Aurelien Guichard.  He has mixed floral notes, like Bulgarian rose with orange blossom, frankincense and vanilla.  He produced what he says "is the scent of marble powder—reminiscent of his mother, a sculptor. In addition to its cutting-edge bottle, UFO breaks boundaries by ignoring perfume’s traditional pyramid theory (of top, “heart,” and base notes) in favor of two equal balances between the heart note (the “marble”) and other ingredients."

When Ron Arad was approached to design Kenzo’s UFO Unidentified Fragrance Object, Kenzo wanted to "create a vehicle for fragrance that breaks with traditional industry codes and evokes sensuality when in contact with the skin." The perfume is not defined by the traditional olfactory pyramid. Its structure is a balance between a powerful heart, “the marble accord”, and four natural raw ingredients that add facets to the note. An exemplary object for both the art and fragrance collector.  Bottle design by Ron Arad and his work in Paris and New York City. Arad’s bottle is currently on display at New York’s Museum of Modern Art as part of “Ron Arad: No Discipline,”  Kenzo

Rose Poivrée by The Different Company

Jean-Claude Ellena has gone further than a simple evocation of a rose. The aroma of Rose Poivrée "spawns a feeling a mischievous angels playing in heavens blue skies." Rose Poivrée is a costly fragrance and numerous website's state that "It takes over one hundred pounds of precious Damascus rose petals to produce just one bottle of Rose Poivrée" . Rose Poivrée mixes pure rose with pepper and spice, the tangle of dark, luscious rose petals to the fiery spice-meets-green evolution.

Chandler Burr says of Rose Poivrée in his article on Scent Notes "What the Cat Dragged In": "Here, Jean-Claude Ellena uses civet to amend rose absolute, and the overall effect is akin to breathing in the warm, slightly fetid breath of some immense, fur-covered animal. It is that moment in an Indian spice market when a surge of sweltering, humid air, as if from the lungs of some morose god, drowns you in spice and car exhaust. But if you have the skin for it, this perfume is mesmerizing, even today".  Notes inlcude Damascus rose, rose bay, pepper, coriander, vetiver, civet.  Lucky Scent

Rosa Incantevole by Nobile 1942

NOBILE 1942 fragrances contain essential oils obtained through natural processes of steeping, filtering, and distillation. There are three fragrances based on the Turkish rose also known as the Damask rose (from Damascus) which originated in the near east. It becomes warmer with cedarwood, cinnamon and coconut that ends in perfect harmony with vanilla and white musk. III Rose Iris has a strong character on its own, but it radiates magical emotions as soon as it combined with fragrances I or II.

An entrepreneur at heart who had already been seduced by the magic of perfume, he decided to set up his own perfumery based on the novel concept of selling perfumery products directly to the tourists who were beginning to discover the French Rivera’s charms. Here are just three rose fragrances:  Cette Nuit La: Memories of a summer's evening lit up with orange blossom, bulgarian rose, iris and heliotrope. Sensual notes of patchouli, amber and leather. site    Rose de Mai: Around sweet-smelling Grasse roses blossom gardenia and violet, jasmine and wild lily of the valley, discreet against a backdrop of ylang-ylang and blackcurrant leaves. site   Maman Cherie: The very essence of tenderness with delicate rose, fresh lily of the valley soft magnolia, sparkling mandarin, warm musk and vanilla. Rose d' Homme
Les Parfums de Rosine

Rose d’Homme is for the sophisticated, multi- sensorial man and this fragrance is made with the famous “rose note” created by Rosine. This is described as a "woody rose".  Les Parfums de Rosine Rose d'Homme is a mascuine, crisp, dry fragrance for men.  The perfume was created by Marie-Hélène Rogeon and François Robert in 2005.
The notes of Rose d’Homme is based on a classical struture of Head/Heart/Base composition.  The Vetyver-Lavender base is combined with the opulent Rosine Rose and: Citrus, Bergamot, Patchouli, Vanilla, Herbal notes, Jasmine, Tangerine and Leather.

Part Four of Raphaella’s Roses below features over 110 old and new scents.  While most are “straight up” rose scents, others have enough rose in them to add to the list.  Surprisingly, during my research, I learned that both a “perfume scientist” and a “fragrance expert” classified certain fragrances as “rose” scents.

I had so much fun gathering, what might possibly be, the largest listing of rose fragrances in the world (outside of the work of expert Michael Edwards)  There were many roses that I did not include because they were either discontinued or too hard to find to purchase. I do hope you enjoy Part Four of Raphaella's Roses, a huge collection of rose fragrances.   You may view “Roses” and “Raphaella's Roses: Part One thru Three" here: a separate compilation of rose fragrances and reviews.  There is something here for everyone, men and women alike.  Next month I will feature Part Five as well as a "Rose Product Guide" that I have put together.  Please see the introduction to my roses by Beth Gehring and Christine Lewandowski here.

Lyric for Women and Lyric for Men by Amouage

Lyric Women was featured in Part One of "Raphaella's Roses" so I will only use a quote from Christopher Chong from an article in Sniffapaloza Magazine. Christopher Chong Creative Director, Amouage said of Lyric Woman... " Whilst working on the Lyric for Women story, I've been inspired by the unconventional beauty of Maria Callas's voice.  It's the emotional quality of her voice that I try to emulate in this fragrance.  Beyond the lyrical beauty of the voice is a sheer dramatic sound.  I try to capture the overall spectrum of Callas's voice from innocence to dramatic tragedy.  Most important of all, it's vital to maintain the poetic beauty in the fragrance whilst developing an accord that evolves with drama and power.  This is achieved by positioning rose with angelica".

We also feature an Interview with Christopher Chong;
Creative Director of House of Amouage By Cristiane Gonçalves

Lyric Woman is an oriental rose, rich, complex and intricate. This is a is decadently rich rose in true Oriental style. Lyric for Women Notes: Bergamot, spicy cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, rose, angelica, jasmine, ylang-ylang, geranium, orris, oakmoss, musk, wood, patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood, vanilla, tonka bean, frankincense  Lyric Man is a rare masculine rose. Deep and dangerous, it is a spicy oriental version of the rose. Infused with angelica, pine and galbanum, it has a striking green quality that makes it seem very urbane. The spices, nutmeg and saffron, and frankincense take the fragrance much further East.  The  vanilla, sandalwood and musk make this the ultimate male fragrance.  Aedes and Lucky Scent

FORWARD BY BETH GEHRING: I adore roses! I grow many different varieties but my father taught me to especially love the oldest ones, the less pretentious looking ones. In my father’s garden grew old fashioned Rosa Rugosas and lovely blowsy English climbers and at a young age I learned to appreciate how different each variety smelled. Some were sweet and some were spicy and many were musky and heavily reminiscent of a rich sexuality.  Roses have been considered sacred throughout all of recorded history and their profoundly simple beauty speaks to the human imagination in a way that almost no other flower does.  The fragrance of a rose garden becomes a total symphony at dusk on a warm summer’s eve and it’s almost impossible to choose a favorite variety! One Bourbon rose is exquisite but bourbon mixed with damask.....the combinations of scent is endless and almost impossible to fathom.

So it is with Raphaella’s Rose’s.  Created by Raphaella Barkley, you will find a rose fragrance here for absolutely everyone. With the same commitment that she pours into everything that she does, Raphaella has created the most concise compendium of rose fragrances that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Her devotion to her topic is absolute and the information is delivered in a way that is both fun, passionate and without pretension. I’ve never met anyone who loves rose fragrances as much as Raphaella and her complete and obvious adoration for the subject matter is infectious. With her trademark wit and almost encyclopedic knowledge of the subject she’s given us a gift that I know that I’ll return to time and again. My wallet might not be thanking her but my heart definitely is. There is no flower on earth that has the ability to transform and transport my imagination as much as the perfume of one heavenly rose and the perfume of the rose can heal my spirit while delighting all of my senses. Even if you think that you don’t like rose perfumes come and immerse yourself in Raphaella’s world for awhile. You’ll be glad that you did because there is a luscious rose perfume just waiting for you here. I promise!

FORWARD BY CHRISTINE LEWANDOWSKI: Raphaella's Roses have, from the very beginning been a labor of love.  It began as an idea to list rose scents because our Editor in chief loves them.  Over the life of the magazine, Raphaella’s Roses took on a life of its own, as more and more people responded to this particular section of the magazine.  It is little wonder, considering the lengthy and varied history of roses.  Indeed, fossil records indicate roses have existed as long as 35 million years ago.  Fossilized rose flowers and hips are found in the western United States and in Europe: along with petrified rose wreaths in Egyptian tombs.  Most of us are familiar with the many ways in which the rose is used as a symbol.  Be it by color, to represent emotions or flower to represent nations.  The rose has been used to represent everything from English factions in the War of the Roses, the Rosicrucians, Christian martyrs, the divine feminine,  New York City and The Alchemy Guild.  A sixteenth century lexicon states that the rose is a symbol that has many very profound meanings in all branches of the Hermetic mystery. The Rosicrucian esoteric fraternity adopted the rose on a cross as their symbol. The cross chosen was one of equal lengths and not the crucifixion cross. Sir Francis Bacon is purported to have been a Rosicrucian and went so far as to wear roses on the toes of his shoes."

The rose has been used in literature from ancient Buddhist and Confucianism, the Old Testament, Shakespeare and Alice in Wonderland.  Is it any wonder that the rose and rose fragrances continue to fascinate us?  We hope you enjoy this Four Part Series of Raphaella’s Roses.
